Concept for an installation to help us break our reliance on plastic. An enormous vortex created from waste plastic emulates Garbage Island, a vast, swirling mass of plastic currently growing exponentially in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. At its edges, the plastic waste melts into solid sheets to provide a backdrop for a step-by-step plan for us to acknowledge, assess and finally shake off our ‘plastic addiction’.
Developed in Kristine Matthews’ Environmental Design course at the University of Washington. Response to the project ‘Make Change’, in which student teams design installations to create a change they would like to see in the world.
