Sound Lab

Client: EMP Museum, Seattle, Washington Design Team: Kristine Matthews, lead designer; Cassie Klingler, senior designer; Motomi Kudo-King, structural designer; Shawn Wolfe, illustrator; Josh Hayward, poster photography Photos: Cassie Klingler, Doug Manelski

Ten years after its opening, Sound Lab was looking and feeling a little tired. EMP Museum approached us to help them refresh and revitalize this space where visitors of all ages can try their hand on a range of musical instruments, sound mixing boards and DJ stations. Our redesign was inspired by Seattle’s music culture and the music-making process, and uses layered posters, graphic illustrations and playful screen interactives. At the Music Is… wall, visitors can post what music means to them, with answers displayed in reused CD cases.
